Automating An Post (eCommHub) and Shopify for High-Volume Irish Stores
Manual eCommHub and Shopify fulfilment is fine until it isn't. Here's where the time actually goes for high-volume Irish stores, what you can fix for free, and when automating the handoff with EirLink is worth it.

If you have ever spent a Friday afternoon exporting a CSV out of Shopify, uploading it to An Post's eCommHub, downloading a pile of labels, and then pasting tracking numbers back into Shopify one order at a time, this one is for you.
That routine is fine when you are doing ten orders a week. It starts to fall apart somewhere around a hundred. The work does not get harder, it just gets longer, and it is exactly the kind of repetitive admin that quietly eats an afternoon you should be spending on the actual business.
So before recommending any particular fix, it is worth being honest about where the time goes, what you can sort out for free, and where a tool only makes sense once the volume justifies it.
Where the time actually goes
Most people assume printing the labels is the slow part. It usually is not. The slow parts are the handoffs between systems:
- Getting orders out of Shopify and into a shape eCommHub will accept.
- Matching An Post tracking numbers back to the right Shopify order.
- Marking each order as fulfilled so the customer gets their shipping email.
- Keeping track of what is actually in transit versus what is sitting in a corner.
None of these are difficult. They are just manual, and every one is a chance to put a tracking number on the wrong order, which is the sort of small mistake that turns into a confused support email three days later.
What you can fix without paying for anything
Before you spend money, a few habits genuinely help:
- Batch your dispatch. Pick one or two cut-off times a day instead of fulfilling orders as they trickle in. You print in one pass and queue parcels in one trip to the post office.
- Standardise your packaging. Fewer box sizes means fewer weight surprises and quicker picking.
- Keep your address fields clean, especially for the UK. eCommHub wants the country code as GB. Typing "UK" or "United Kingdom" is a common reason parcels get held up.
For a lot of small stores that is genuinely enough. There is no point automating a job you only run twice a week.
When automation starts to pay for itself
The maths is not complicated. If your shipping routine takes roughly two hours a day across exports, label runs and tracking updates, that is around ten hours a week. At that point the question is not really whether automation is worth it. It is whether you trust the tool not to make a mess of your orders.
That is the specific gap EirLink is built for. It connects your own An Post (eCommHub) account directly to your Shopify store and takes over the handoffs above:
- Orders import from Shopify as they come in, so there is no daily export step.
- You print labels one at a time or in batches of up to 100, and get a single merged PDF rather than a folder full of separate files.
- The An Post tracking number syncs back to Shopify as a fulfilment automatically, which triggers your normal Shopify shipping confirmation email.
- It checks An Post for scan events every half hour, so you can see what is moving without logging into eCommHub.
The part that matters most: you keep your own An Post account and your own negotiated rates. EirLink does not sit between you and An Post, and it does not add a markup on postage. It is automating the admin around the account you already have, not replacing your carrier.
CSV orders still have a place
Not everything arrives through Shopify. If you take wholesale or off-platform orders, you will still have a spreadsheet of addresses to deal with. Those go through a CSV import, so your one-off and bulk orders land in the same label flow as your Shopify orders instead of being a separate manual job at the end of the day.
Why the Irish specifics matter
The reason a general global shipping tool can be frustrating here is that An Post tends to be an afterthought in them. The tracking formats, the eCommHub label fields, the GB country code for UK parcels: individually these are tiny details, but they are the details that break a fulfilment run at five in the evening. A tool that only deals with the Irish market tends to get them right, because getting them right is the whole job.
The honest summary
If you are shipping a handful of orders, keep it manual and just batch your dispatch. Another tool is not worth the overhead. If you are past the point where shipping admin is quietly costing you an afternoon, automating the Shopify and eCommHub handoff is one of the easier wins on the table, and you can do it without giving up your An Post rates.
If that is where you have ended up, EirLink is worth a look.
